The classic Fiat 124 Spider that was sold between 1966 & 1980 was known for its timeless bodywork and affordability, and it’s rare to come across one now-a-days as there were only around 200,000 manufactured.
Fiat confirmed in February earlier this year that there will be a new 2016 model of the 124 Spider, and after months of speculation it has been revealed that Abarth are going to provide a performance based model of the car. Fiat’s plan is to offer a comfortable based car and on the other end of the spectrum, have an Abarth model which can leave all the other roadsters in the dust.
The 124 Spider is based on the Mazda MX-5 and is set to be released in 2016. It is also in the ring to compete with the Mini Copper Roadster and Porsche Boxster, however the Italians think they have created something unique altogether, as the car will shine apart from the crowd with a ton of Fiat heritage. It is un-confirmed whether the Fiat model will be a 2-seater or 2+2 setup that was in the classic 124 Spider.
Abarth will combine the elegant Italian design we all know and love with an aggressive edge. From the released images we can see the exterior is modern, sleek and sporty, with a mean body-kit enhanced by racing stripes, black alloy wheels with bright red brake callipers.
The two large chrome exhausts at the back will shine below a carbon-fibre diffuser and the car will have lowered suspension to finish off the overall racing look.
The engine package for the Abarth 124 Spider is un-confirmed, but we think it will be similar to the 1.75-litre turbo-charged engine we have seen in the Alfa Romeo 4C. Roughly putting out 200bhp to the rear wheels with the lightweight chassis will make this car powerful and nimble to drive, perfect for track days!
Abarth are looking to revitalise their performance brand in 2016-17 with the new 124 Spider and Abarth 500 models. They hope to distinguish a whole new level making the cars look and feel extreme and sporty, not just adding a few upgrades.
